蒲原宿の話
旧東海道を歩いていると、舗装なのに土を思わせる淡い茶色の路面が足にやわらかく、低い町家が続く景観に自然に溶け込んでいることに気づきます。この色も、そしてレトロな意匠の街灯や川沿いの手すりも、すべて「蒲原宿まちなみの会」が住民と協力して選んだものです。平成以降、建て替えが進むなかで歴史的建造物が失われていく危機感から、当時の蒲原町役場建設課が呼びかけ、古い家屋に暮らす人々が中心となって結成されました。「これ以上壊させない」を合い言葉に、道路舗装の色見本や街灯のデザイン案を持ち寄り、投票で決定した経緯があります。
同会は、保存に努める家々へ「美しい街並み感謝状」を贈り、「住み続けてくれてありがとう」と励まし続けてきました。授与当時は約四十八軒――現在も多くが解体を免れ、江戸末期・明治・大正・昭和・平成の建物が違和感なく並ぶ独特の景観をかたちづくっています。
最近、会員たちは二年をかけて冊子『蒲原宿の楽しい暮らし』を編纂しました。町の歴史や行事、残る建物の写真を豊富に盛り込み、「蒲原にはこんな良さがある」と分かりやすくまとめた一冊です。価格は五百円で、宿内の和泉屋と国登録有形文化財「旧五十嵐歯科医院」で取り扱っています。
任意団体としての活動範囲は約十二万平方メートル（およそ三万六千坪）、宿内二百七十戸を対象にアンケート調査を実施しながら、国登録文化財の管理や「みせのまギャラリー」の公開も会員外に呼びかけて実施しています。保存と暮らしを両立させるその姿勢が、旧街道を歩く旅人にとっても、過去と現在が穏やかに重なる風景を守り続けているのです。
The Story of Kambara-syuku
Walking the old Tōkaidō you may notice that the pavement, though modern, is tinted a soft earth-brown that blends almost imperceptibly with the line of low machiya townhouses. The hue, along with the retro street lamps and river-side railings, was selected by the Kambara-syuku Machinami no Kai (Townscape Association) in consultation with local residents. Since the early 1990s, when post-war houses began to be replaced at an accelerating pace, the former Kambara Town Office’s Works Section invited owners of historic properties to form this voluntary body under the motto “No more demolitions.” Colour charts for road surfaces and sketches for lamp standards were circulated and, after a neighbourhood vote, the present designs were adopted.
To encourage continued stewardship, the association instituted “Beautiful Streetscape Commendations,” certificates presented to households that maintain traditional buildings. Approximately forty-eight dwellings were recognised at the outset, and many of them—dating from the late Edo, Meiji, Taishō, Shōwa and Heisei periods—still stand side by side today, creating a layered yet harmonious streetscape.
Most recently the members spent two years compiling Kambara-syuku no Tanoshii Kurashi (“An Enjoyable Life in Kambara-syuku”). Richly illustrated with photographs, the booklet introduces the post-station’s history, annual events and surviving architecture in accessible prose. It is sold for ¥500 at Izumiya and at the Old Igarashi Dental Clinic, a nationally registered tangible cultural property within the district.
As a voluntary organisation the association oversees roughly 120,000 m² (about 36,000 tsubo) and surveys some 270 households. It also manages the registered heritage property, organises public exhibitions in the mise-no-ma gallery, and invites non-members to participate. By balancing conservation with everyday living, the group helps ensure that travellers on the old highway encounter a landscape where past and present coexist in quiet continuity.
