二階の調度品を拝見させていただきました
旧東海道沿いの和泉屋二階には、地域固有と伝えられる箪笥類が保存されています。富士川から興津川流域で用いられた形式とされ、右手の小箱にはからくり仕掛けの隠し部屋があり、貴重品の収納に対応していました。高さ約一メートルの二段重ねの箪笥は観音開きの扉と複数の鍵を備え、さらに内部の仕掛けを順に動かさなければ全体が開かない構造です。扉裏の留め金には細密な彫刻が施され、合わせると家紋が現れる意匠も確認できます。
家具のほかに、養蚕と機織の道具も残ります。木製歯車を四組連結した座繰り機は、繭を煮て取り出した生糸を巻き取るための装置で、現在も滑らかに稼働します。明治期の織機は一階に、スウェーデン製の大型織機は二階に設置され、駿河裂織倶楽部が制作活動に使用しています。後者は足踏みが軽く、従来機に比べ少ない力で操作できる点が特徴です。
これらの調度と機材は、江戸後期から明治期にかけての蒲原宿の生活文化と小規模産業を物理的に示す資料として公開されています。
Viewing the Second-Floor Furnishings
The second floor of Izumiya on the old Tōkaidō preserves a group of chests said to be distinctive to the stretch between the Fuji and Okitsu Rivers. One chest, about one metre high and built in two stacked sections, contains a small side box fitted with a concealed compartment operated by internal mechanisms intended for valuables. The main doors open in the “double-leaf” (kannon-bira) style, and several separate locks must be released in sequence before the inner devices disengage. Metal fasteners on the reverse of the doors bear fine carvings; when the doors are closed, the fittings align to form the family crest.
Equipment for sericulture and weaving is also displayed. A hand-cranked silk-reeling machine, constructed entirely of wood and driven by four linked gear wheels, still turns smoothly and was used to wind filaments drawn from boiled cocoons. A Meiji-period loom stands on the ground floor, while a large Swedish-made loom on the second floor is employed by the Suruga Saki-ori Club; its light treadle action requires less effort than earlier Japanese models.
Taken together, these furnishings and tools provide material evidence of domestic culture and small-scale industry in Kambara-syuku from the late Edo into the Meiji period.
