次郎長の菩提寺、梅蔭寺を訪ねて
清水次郎長の菩提寺である梅蔭寺には、今も次郎長を慕う人々が訪れています。次郎長は明治二十六年、一八九三年に七十四歳で亡くなりました。境内には、次郎長と三人のお蝶さん、そして子分の中心人物であった大政、小政、増川仙右衛門の墓があります。森の石松の墓も裏手にありますが、こちらは遺骨を納めたものではなく、供養塔とされています。
大政と小政の墓は、周囲が欠けて丸みを帯びています。これは、勝負事の際に墓の破片を持っていると運がつくと信じられ、削って持ち帰る人がいたためだそうです。現在は墓を守るため、柵が設けられています。
一方、次郎長の墓は、埼玉県の三波石という自然石で造られています。大変丈夫な石であるため、欠けることなく、当時の姿をよく残しているといいます。梅蔭寺では今も線香の煙が絶えることがなく、次郎長が多くの人に記憶され続けていることを感じさせます。
Visiting Baienji Temple, the Family Temple of Jirōchō
Baienji Temple, the family temple of Shimizu Jirōchō, continues to receive visitors who remember him today. Jirōchō died in Meiji 26 (1893) at the age of seventy-four. Within the temple grounds are the graves of Jirōchō, his three wives known as Ocho, and his leading followers Ōmasa, Komasa, and Masukawa Senuemon. The grave of Mori no Ishimatsu also stands behind them, although it is said to be a memorial monument rather than a grave containing his remains.
The graves of Ōmasa and Komasa have become rounded and chipped along the edges. This is said to have happened because people once believed that carrying fragments from the graves would bring good luck in gambling, and pieces were taken away over time. Today, fences have been installed to help preserve the graves.
In contrast, Jirōchō’s grave is made from a natural stone called Sanba-seki from Saitama Prefecture. Because the stone is extremely durable, the grave has remained intact and retains much of its original appearance. At Baienji Temple, incense smoke is said never to cease, reflecting how Jirōchō continues to be remembered by many people.
