神庫（しんこ）と家康の時計
久能山東照宮には、徳川家康公の海外交流を伝える貴重な品も残されています。
境内の黒い壁の建物は「神庫」と呼ばれ、家康公の宝物を納めていた蔵です。ここに長く保管されていたものの一つが、スペイン国王フェリペ三世から贈られた時計です。
この時計は、慶長十六年に家康公の手元に届きました。家康公が亡くなった後、二代将軍によって大切な遺品として久能山に奉納され、その後およそ二百五十年にわたり神庫の中で保管されていました。
通常、古い時計は修理のたびに部品が交換されるため、当初の部品が残りにくいといわれます。しかし、この時計は長く使われずに保管されていたため、部品の多くが当時のまま残っているとされ、世界的にも高く評価されています。
この時計は、一六〇九年にスペイン船が難破した際、家康公が新しい船を造って帰国を助けたことへの礼として贈られたものです。久能山東照宮に残るこの時計は、家康公の平和外交を伝える品であり、学術的にも注目される貴重な遺物です。
The Shinko Storehouse and Ieyasu’s Clock
At Kunōzan Tōshōgū, several valuable objects remain that reflect Tokugawa Ieyasu’s connections with overseas countries.
The black-walled building within the shrine grounds is called the Shinko, or sacred storehouse, where treasures associated with Ieyasu were preserved. One of the objects long kept there is a clock presented by King Philip III of Spain.
The clock came into Ieyasu’s possession in 1611. After Ieyasu’s death, the second shogun dedicated it to Kunōzan as an important relic, and it remained stored inside the Shinko for approximately 250 years.
In many old clocks, original parts are often replaced through repeated repairs, making it difficult for the original components to survive. However, because this clock was preserved without long-term use, it is said that most of its original parts remain intact. For this reason, it has received high international recognition.
The clock was presented as a gift of gratitude after a Spanish ship was wrecked in 1609 and Ieyasu arranged for a new vessel to be built to assist the crew’s return home. Today, the clock preserved at Kunōzan Tōshōgū is regarded as both a symbol of Ieyasu’s peaceful diplomacy and a historically significant artifact of scholarly interest.
