蔵の外にたたずむ小さな社――木屋稲荷大明神

木屋江戸資料館の土蔵を出て左へわずかに歩くと、石造りの小さな社が視界に入ります。これが「木屋稲荷大明神」。もとは“お多福の神様”として親しまれ、近隣の人びとや旅人が足繁く通った祠でした。

時が下り、ある信心深い人が「大いに助けられたお礼に」と稲荷大神をここへ合祀し、朱塗りの鳥居を寄進したことで、現在の形になったと伝えられています。　社殿の右手にあるひと回り大きな石のお社は、創建時から百年以上変わらず鎮座する最古の部分。石肌をなでると、ひんやりとした感触の奥に歳月の重みを感じ取ることができます。いまも学業成就や商売繁盛を願う参拝者が絶えず、“お多福”の福徳を授かろうと手を合わせています。

祠の前で耳を澄ますと、東側には蒲原駅を発着する列車の走行音が響き、西側には旧東海道を渡る風の音が届きます。一本の街道を挟んで近代と江戸が交差するこの場所は、過去と現在が折り重なる清水区蒲原ならではの景観です。往時には大名行列が行き来したというこの旧街道を歩きながら、蔵と祠が守り続けてきた土地の記憶に思いを馳せてみてください。

現代の列車と古い街道が出会う不思議な情景の中で、木屋稲荷大明神は静かに歴史の連なりを物語っています。散策の途中、そっと手を合わせてみれば、旅の時間にやさしい節目が訪れることでしょう。

A Small Shrine Beyond the Storehouse—Kiya Inari Daimyōjin

Step out of the earth-walled storehouse of the Kyoya Edo Archive and turn slightly to the left: a compact stone shrine soon enters your view. This is Kiya Inari Daimyōjin. In earlier times the sanctuary was revered as the abode of an Otafuku deity, a figure of good fortune who drew local residents and travelers alike.

According to oral accounts, its present configuration dates from the day a devout benefactor, grateful for help received, enshrined the god Inari here and donated the vermilion torii that now frames the approach. Just to the right of the current structure stands a somewhat larger stone shrine—the oldest component—unchanged for more than a century. Touch the cool surface of its masonry and the accumulated years become almost palpable. Even today, visitors come to petition for academic success or commercial prosperity, hoping to share in the benevolence traditionally associated with Otafuku.

Pause before the sanctuary and listen: to the east you will hear the rhythm of trains arriving at and departing from Kambara Station; to the west, the faint rustle of wind along the Old Tōkaidō. Here, a single roadway separates modern transport from an artery once traversed by feudal processions. Walking this historic route, reflect on the memories preserved by both storehouse and shrine—a dialogue between past and present unique to Kambara in Shimizu Ward.

In this meeting place of contemporary rails and Edo-period highway, Kyoya Inari Daimyōjin quietly attests to the continuity of local history. Offer a brief prayer during your wanderings, and you may find that your journey acquires a gentle punctuation in time.
