由比本陣の中に入って
立派な門をくぐると、分厚い両開きの木の扉が迎えてくれます。扉には鋲が打たれ、由比本陣の格式を感じさせる造りになっています。この門は、当時の姿をもとに復元されたものです。
由比本陣は、外から中が見えにくい「遮蔽型」の本陣とされています。現在は公園として整備されていますが、庭に据えられている石灯籠は当時のものです。玄関から数えると十六基あり、由比川で良い石が取れたこともあって、公園内には多くの石が配置されています。
遮蔽の塀の内側には石積みも残されています。馬の水飲み場の塀を挟んだ裏側にあたる場所で、かつてはここから由比川を渡る参勤交代の列を確認できたといいます。当時は高い建物がなかったため、行列が川を渡ったことが分かると、本陣側では迎え入れの準備を始めました。
現在建っている櫓は当時のものではありませんが、その手前の場所は物見台のような役割を持っていたとされています。今では静かな公園として親しまれている由比本陣公園ですが、門、石灯籠、石積み、物見の場所に目を向けると、参勤交代を迎えた本陣のあり方をたどることができます。
Entering the Yui Honjin Site
Passing through the imposing gate, visitors arrive at a pair of thick wooden doors opening inward from both sides. Metal studs are set into the surface of the doors, reflecting the formal status of the Yui Honjin. The gate itself has been reconstructed based on its historical appearance.
The Yui Honjin is described as a “shielded-style” honjin, designed so that the interior could not easily be seen from outside. Today the grounds have been arranged as a public park, but several original elements remain. The stone lanterns placed throughout the garden date from the period of the honjin itself. Sixteen lanterns stand between the entrance and the garden area, and many stones are used throughout the grounds, reflecting the reputation of the Yui River for producing high-quality stone.
Stone masonry also survives inside the shielding walls. Near the rear side of the wall surrounding the horse watering area, attendants once watched for daimyo processions crossing the Yui River. At that time there were no tall buildings in the area, making it possible to observe the procession from a distance. Once the procession was seen crossing the river, preparations to receive the travelers would begin within the honjin.
The turret standing there today is not original, but the area in front of it is said to have functioned as a lookout point. Although Yui Honjin Park is now maintained as a quiet public space, the gate, stone lanterns, masonry, and lookout area still convey how the honjin once operated in connection with the sankin-kōtai processions along the Tōkaidō Road.
