隠し階段から蔵の下へ
鉄舟が逃れたと伝えられる隠し階段を下りると、蔵の下に設けられた秘密の出口へと続きます。そこには、外から簡単に開けられないようにするための閂がありました。中からは開けられますが、外からは破られにくい構造になっており、隠し階段の存在が知られなければ、蔵の下は守られる仕組みだったといいます。
出口へ向かうには、複数の扉を順に開ける必要があります。土戸と呼ばれる重い扉もあり、当時、大切な財産を守るために厳重な構造が考えられていたことがわかります。扉を抜けて外へ出ると、現在はJRの線路がありますが、当時はその先が海でした。蔵の外には階段があり、そこを降りると砂浜へ出られたと伝えられています。
鉄舟は、この出口から外へ出て、望嶽亭・藤屋が持っていた船で清水へ向かったとされています。現在は線路や防波堤がありますが、当時は海がすぐ近くにあり、船で移動できる場所だったことがうかがえます。
望嶽亭・藤屋の蔵、隠し階段、そして海へ通じる出口は、山岡鉄舟の脱出に関わる場所として語り継がれています。もしこの蔵がなかったら、清水次郎長とのつながりがなかったら、そして鉄舟がここに助けを求めなかったら、明治維新の流れも違っていたかもしれません。
望嶽亭・藤屋は、現在も富士山と駿河湾を望む場所に残っています。見学は予約制で行われています。
From the Hidden Staircase to Beneath the Storehouse
Descending the hidden staircase said to have been used by Yamaoka Tesshū, visitors are led to a concealed exit built beneath the storehouse. There, heavy locking bars were installed so that the doors could not easily be opened from the outside. The structure allowed people inside to escape, while making it difficult for anyone outside to force entry. It is said that as long as the existence of the hidden staircase remained unknown, the area beneath the storehouse could be securely protected.
To reach the outside, several doors had to be opened in sequence. Among them was a heavy earthen door known as a tsukido. The arrangement shows how carefully the building was designed to protect valuables. Beyond the doors is the exterior of the storehouse. Today, the JR railway tracks run nearby, but at the time the sea extended directly beyond this point. Stairs once led down from the storehouse to the sandy beach below.
According to the tradition preserved at Bōgakutei Fujiya, Tesshū exited from this passage and departed for Shimizu by boat owned by the house. Although railway lines and seawalls now stand along the coast, the sea was once immediately beside the building, making travel by boat possible.
The storehouse, hidden staircase, and concealed exit leading toward the sea continue to be remembered as places connected with the escape of Yamaoka Tesshū. It is also said that, without this storehouse, without the connection to Shimizu Jirochō, and without Tesshū seeking refuge here, the course of the Meiji Restoration itself might have unfolded differently.
Today, Bōgakutei Fujiya still stands in a location overlooking Mount Fuji and Suruga Bay. Visits are available by reservation.
