次郎長の船宿『末広』を訪ねて
清水次郎長は、明治十九年十一月に船宿「末広」を開きました。そして明治二十六年、その二階で三代目お蝶さんに見守られながら生涯を閉じたと伝えられています。
お蝶さんは、次郎長の十七回忌にあたる明治四十二年、新聞の回顧談で、次郎長は人にお金を与えることが好きで、帳場に座っていると客に金を渡してしまい、商売にならなかったと語っています。晩年の次郎長の人柄をうかがわせる話です。
船宿「末広」は、もとは波止場にありましたが、昭和十三年に桜橋の北側へ移されました。その後、解体される際に、次郎長ゆかりの建物として部材が残され、現在は外観や残された部材を用いて再建されています。再建された建物に残る柱や材には、次郎長が生きた時代の記憶が受け継がれています。
かつて「末広」があった場所の近くには、「次郎長宅跡」の石碑が建てられています。また、その周辺には芝野栄七の養魚所もあり、徳川慶喜がそれらを写真に残したと伝えられています。さらに、慶喜の警護役を自認していた新門辰五郎が、明治になって江戸へ戻る際、後のことを次郎長に託したともいわれています。その礼として、慶喜は将軍時代に身につけていた熨斗目を次郎長に贈ったと伝えられています。
次郎長の船宿「末広」は、現在、巴川の河口近く、港橋のたもとに移築され、無料で一般公開されています。梅蔭寺とあわせて訪ねることで、浪曲や映画で知られる次郎長だけではなく、明治の清水に生き、地域と人々に関わり続けた次郎長の姿をたどることができます。
Visiting Jirocho’s Boathouse “Suehiro”
Shimizu Jirocho opened the boathouse Suehiro in November of Meiji 19. It is said that in Meiji 26, he passed away on the second floor of this building while being attended by the third Ocho-san.
In a newspaper memoir published in Meiji 42, the seventeenth anniversary of Jirocho’s death, Ocho-san recalled that Jirocho enjoyed giving money to people so much that when he sat at the accounting desk, he would hand money to customers and business could hardly continue. The story conveys something of Jirocho’s character in his later years.
The boathouse Suehiro originally stood near the wharf, but in Showa 13 it was relocated to the north side of Sakurabashi. Later, when the building faced demolition, some of its materials were preserved because of its connection to Jirocho. The present reconstruction uses surviving structural elements together with a recreated exterior. The pillars and materials that remain continue to preserve traces of the period in which Jirocho lived.
Near the original site of Suehiro, there is now a stone monument marking the former location of Jirocho’s residence. It is also said that Tokugawa Yoshinobu photographed both the area and the nearby fish farm of Shibano Eishichi. In addition, Shinmon Tatsugoro, who regarded himself as a protector of Yoshinobu, is said to have entrusted matters in Shimizu to Jirocho when returning to Edo after the Meiji Restoration. As a gesture of thanks, Yoshinobu reportedly presented Jirocho with a noshime silk garment that he had worn during his time as shogun.
Today, Jirocho’s boathouse Suehiro has been relocated to a site near the mouth of the Tomoe River, beside Minato Bridge, and is open to the public free of charge. Visiting it together with Baiin-ji Temple offers an opportunity to see not only the Jirocho known through narrative performance and film, but also the figure of a man who lived in Meiji-era Shimizu and remained closely connected to the region and its people.
